seen 17 years ago. i seen mitt romney doing the same exact campaigning when he was running for senate against ted kennedy mischaracterizing his business, his record. i think it's important for the american people to be informed and educated. so i continue to do this. he's caused this to happen by running for president. i wouldn't be out here today if it wasn't for him. you. >> you also spoke at the convention. people may recognize for from that. making money without a moral compass. do you really think that he lacks a moral compass. in america, capitalism is king. correct? so when coming down to a moral compass, do you think that it's basically about the almighty dollar and not so much about you the employee? >> i think it's definitely about the almighty dollar as you say it. but i think it's beyond that. i also said in the speech i didn't think he was necessarily a bad man. i was talking only about his morals in business and the way he does business. the way he talks about how he created jobs. when bain capital never employed more than 400 people themselves. they invested in companie

. romney has to get people to change their minds from president obama. so it's not just about having the zinger. it's about really changing people's minds. it's very difficult. when you look back the last 40 years, very rarely does one candidate go into debates losing then come back to lead. that's challenging. one thing to watch also is in the interview show with paul ryan, paul ryan was asked how does your budget plan add up? he says i'm not really sure i have time to explain that right now. you better believe they will press romney about it on wednesday. that's the kind of thing they have to avoid. >> karen, as alice brought up, foreign policy. that being a hot topic issue in the headlines and also for very good reason. americans want to know what president obama's foreign policy is going for. because of situations that seem to be forever in the lexicon of our conversation. certainly in afghanistan with what we've seen happening there. so karen, with that being said, can the president sharpen what he wants to say knowing that's going to be a vulnerable spot for him. mitt romney wa

and current one is overwhelming. can romney get the post-debate bounce kerry did in '04 and take it one step further and turn it into something kerry couldn't do eight years ago. in '04 president bush had a six-point lead before the debates but kerry's performance boosted him tying the men for the final debate but it was senator kerry in december '04 and not president elect kerry. the national polls are close her today than eight years ago but the numbers in key battlegrounds today tell an obama victory story. democratic strategist steve el mendorf, kerry's deputy campaign manager in '04. how are you? >> good, how are you. >> tell me about why your guy won the debates and lost the election and what that says potentially about this dynamic and this race right now is this. >> i think any challenger has a benefit when they get up on the stage against the president of the united states. the debates level the playing field. they put you on the stage in an equal footing. i think mitt romney comes into the debate with an advantage because of that. i think the question in this race, all cam

this entire year. president obama and mitt romney, one on one, wednesday night, denver, colorado. let me bring in chief political analyst gloria borger with a preview and, gloria, hit this home for me. we talked about how crucial this is, really, for both of these men. we say how crucial, really how crucial is it? >> well, i don't think the stakes can get any higher. this isn't as if you have 20 primary debates like you did for the republicans during the primary season. you got a few times for both mitt romney and president obama to show their stuff, this first debate is huge. largely because the race is tight, in the battleground states, the president seems to be really gaining an advantage. and generally, you know, you can't decide as a voter to fire somebody until you're sure that the replacement can do a good job. this is that moment when you're going to have a huge audience and if you're mitt romney, you have to explain to american voters why you can be commander in chief, and why you would be the replacement for president obama. >> isn't so much of this, though, leading up

mitt romney did earlier this year where you have maybe 30 seconds to get in an answer and you don't necessarily get to answer every time, it's just him and president obama sitting there with a moderator. so he should be prepared for the fact that there is a possibility of a follow-up question that says, okay, how are you going to do that? yes, let's take the time for you to walk us through it. that being said, look, he's going to get a certain amount of gravitas just sitting there on the stage with the president. whether or not he blows that with trying to use cute words and phrases -- >> zingers? >> i think as karen and julian have suggested those zingers are not going to work. you have to have a sense of timing and rhythm p.. c he doesn't have no timing. it don't mean a thing if you ain't got that swing. the zings won't make a difference. the contrast between obama and romney will show up even more seriously the lack of gravitas. i think it's the lack of substance and seriousness that he has. an automaton can present a kind of face of the machine but it can't get to the heart of t
